Recently I was at a plant sale and passed up a bareroot nectarine tree for $10. What was I thining!? I regretted it the rest of the day but resorted to the idea of just going and getting another from somewhere else even if I spend a few more bucks….(geez. more like twice as much.) So this year we are planting not just any tree but a tree that produces food for the people.

Just envisioning the magnificent blue dot that exists in the universe provokes so much thought about the wondrous circle of life and what happens here on earth. Say good things and live in the Light.

National Park Week – April 17-25, 2010

This year everyone can visit a national park for free. Parks are also offering extra activities and “rolling out the red carpet.” Now is as good a time as any to lace up your shoes and get outside. Take the tent or just go for the day and be sure to check out these 8 under-the-radar parks to see if one is near you. I think we are heading to Lassen National Park but not for National Park Week.

The 2010 Oregon Green Expo

June 18, 19, & 20th in Medford, Oregon. This expo is designed to “showcase resourceful products and educate green enthusiasts.” I feel fortunate to live in a progressive area where things like this are happening and I think expos like this are great for businesses and large-scale green project builders. We won’t be attending this year. For right now our sustainable lifestyle is tending more toward reducing, reusing and growing our own food. Check out the Oregon Green Expo 2010.

Community Gatherings Focus: National Trail Day 2009

Learn more about the ecosystem around you and get involved in your local National Trail Days 2009. The date is set for June 6, 2009. There are celebrations happening everywhere and people will take part in exhibits, dedications, workshops and even trail maintenance. Search for National Trail Days celebration by state.

Here in Eugene, Oregon REI is sponsoring the free event at Mt. Pisgah on June 6, 2009. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. This gathering will be clearing invasive vegetation as well as enjoying snacks, refreshments and good times. Even the tools and gloves are provided so all you have to do is show up with a reverence for the outdoors after you have registered by reading this contact information.

Earth Hour 2009

On March 28, 2009 at 8:30 p.m., local time, World Wildlife Fund is
asking individuals, businesses, governments and organizations around
the world to turn off their lights for one hour — Earth Hour — to
make a global statement of concern about climate change and to
demonstrate their commitment to finding solutions. Turn out. Take
action. Be part of this historic event.

International Biodiesel Day

According to Wikepedia, August 10th has been declared “International Biodiesel Day”.

Transesterification of a vegetable oil was conducted as early as 1853 by scientists E. Duffy and J. Patrick, many years before the first diesel engine became functional. Rudolf Diesel’s prime model, a single 10 ft (3 m) iron cylinder with a flywheel at its base, ran on its own power for the first time in Augsburg, Germany, on August 10, 1893.

I guess if we’re going to make special days for just about everything, heck, why not biodiesel?

Earth Day 2008

Earth Day, the largest Green Celebration on the planet is only a few weeks away. The theme for Earth Day 2008 is “A Call for Climate.”

The Earth Day Network and Green Apple Festival are organizing 8 weekend long, Earth Day Celebrations from coast to coast. Enjoy art music and educational programs.

Just about every city has some sort of small grass roots Earth Day Festival… if you want to promote your local Earth Day Event post is here as a comment.

Earth Hour: Turn Your Lights Out During

Today is a world wide movement to take a stand against global warming. The first annual Earth Hour was celebrated in Sydney Australia. See the difference you can make by participating in Earth Hour 2008.

To participate all you have to do is turn out all your lights out at 8 PM tonight (March 29, 2008)
