Not too long ago I posted about an offer for a free sample of Barlean’s fish oil that I went ahead and sent out for (I paid a small fee for shipping but well worth it) and now it is time to update about my experience.

The package arrived 2nd day air, way sooner than I thought it would! Not great on the carbon footprint but I’m sure I could call the company and request a different shipping method but the 2nd day air would sure be handy if I was in a hurry. This might seem funny but I love the bottle. It’s got a flip-top lid with a little rubber gasket at the opening so when you tip the bottle you have to squeeze it to get it out. It just give a good, controlled pour since the recommended amount is only a teaspoon there just isn’t much surface space to be pouring onto and good fish oil is worth its weight in gold so spilling it is not an option.

I was impressed with the taste…nothing fishy at. all. I did get a little bit of indigestion shortly after taking the oil the first time but I have taken the Barlean’s fish oil a few more times without incident so I think it was unrelated. No burping afterwards either but I generally don’t have a problem with that. I like this product but because I don’t like to pay shipping I would want to find a local retailer of Barlean’s Fish oil.

I have tried just about every Bio-Kleen product out there and have talked about these products before. And while the dishwasher detergent left yucky build-up in the bottom of our dishwasher, every other product has left us pleasantly satisfied including Bio-Kleens Drain Cleaner. I was a bit hesitant to buy it since their was no caustic smell that made me think it would eat away at anything clogging a drain but we followed the instructions and our slow to drain sink was draining like normal once again. My favorite Bio-Kleen product is Bac-Out. It takes care of odors like no other natural and non-toxic cleaner out there.

Our most recent testimony was when our son was refusing to wear a nighttime diaper and he ended up peeing in our bed. Although we are left with a stain to remember the precious moments of toddler parenthood, the odor is gone. We have also used it as a carpet cleaner in a rental machine. Worked awesome and lifted the stains out too without them reappearing. Just remember that for strong odors or stains Bac-Out should be used full-strength for best results.

I have read from many online sources that Nordic Naturals is one of the best fish oils to use and many mamas I know swear by it. It is made from 100% cod liver oil and not only is it tested for any contaniments but it is also derived from some of the purest waters. My lovely naturopath gave me a bunch of samples of orange and lemon flavored cod liver oil and I used them all. The fact that my naturopath recommends this stuff means a lot to me too because she really does her homework on supplements and we have certainly seen the effectiveness of many of the supplements recommended by her.

My kids would not take it even though it was flavored (there is a strawberry flavor too) because there is still a definite fish taste behind the flavor. The oil is thick just like any other oil and I find it a bit hard to swallow but I know the health benefits outweigh the moment of discomfort. I didn’t experience any bad aftertastes or burps but I usually kept a glass of water on the counter for drinking right after taking my spoonful of the Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil.

Would I buy it or recommend it to a friend? Most certainly. It does have a clear, pure taste and I prefer spoonfuls over large horsepills. I also feel much better when I take fish oil from any source. My tendonitis inflammation is noticeably decreased which makes doing everyday things a whole lot easier.

I’ve been using Dr. Hauschka’s Cleansing Creme, Toner, Normalizing Day, Daily Revitalizing Eye Cream, and Lip Care for about 2 months now. I paid $172.50 for the set at Saffron Rouge. They offer a 60-day money back guarantee on all of their organic skin care products so it’s a safe place to try things out. Saffron Rouge offers free samples with your purchase also. You can pick the ones you want so choose wisely, I usually go for the essential oils.

Cleanser & Toner
I’m happy with Dr. Hauschka’s organic skin care. The Cleansing Creme is an exfoliant and has a rich herbal smell. My skin feels healthily, moisturized just from the cleansing creme alone. The Toner comes after the cleanse. (Some years ago I skipped the toner step unaware that it actually helps your moisturizer work among other benefits like maintaining elasticity in the skin). This toner had a tea-like smell.

Moisturize
I was a bit unsure about the Normalizing Day Oil, as I had bought the set for normal to oily skin. The purpose of the oil is that it balances the natural oils in your skin. I use less than one full pump and that is usually plenty to cover my face and neck. The oil spreads well so definitely don’t overuse. Because I was used to applying a lotion, the initial feel of the different type of moisturizing took a few days to get used to but I definitely like it…I feel like I’m glowing! (There is also a moisturizing lotion available, it depend which skin type set you order). The Revitalizing Eye Cream is light and feels great…I’m not old enough for it to really have made any significant reduction in facial lines but I’m hoping I started early enough to keep them from coming.

Lip Care
The Lip Care stick came free with the set. I like the smell of it as it has a bright, herbal scent. It goes on and stays on well. Do I feel the moisture to my lips is superior…no, but the ingredients are quality and organic. I will spend the couple extra dollars to get this one even though it’s equal to any other I’ve used.

I’m completely satisfied with Dr. Hauschka’s organic skin care and will continue using it. Although I have never purchased Dr. Hauschka’s skin care from any sellers on eBay, the prices are much lower than buying from an online retailer. My suggestion would be to buy your initial products from an online retailer with a guarantee, decide what you like and then go to eBay for the good deals.

Tip
If you do any type of traveling and take your skin care on the go with you, I highly recommend getting a starter kit of Dr. Hauschka’s holistic skin care. I took my full size Moisturizing Oil with me in a nice little travel bag with the rest of my items and it leaked out because it didn’t come with a lid so the little pump is exposed.

The set is suppose to last 1 1/2 to 2 months. I don’t use the products everyday as I like to just wash with a washcloth and water a couple times a week. I will probably have to buy a Cleansing Creme before the toner and Normalizing Day Toner are gone. After using the product for almost 2 months, I still have an average of half of each container. It will probably last about 4 months for me.

If there is an opportunity to buy natural toys made with safe, water-based dyes and non-toxic wood material why wouldn’t you? Maybe it’s because the mainstream toys appear to be proven “liked” by infants and children. I buy natural and wooden toys and my children love them. Read what my children and I think about natural and wooden toys to find out if these safe toys are really any good.

There are several different makers of natural and wood toys but I have a couple of favorites. Haba and Plan Toys have proven to stay the test of time and endure the abuse children’s toys sometimes receive. I have wooden toys made by some manufacturers that aren’t in nearly the condition our older Haba and Plan toys are. As I have watched our collection of wooden and natural toys grow over the past few years, I have now chosen to share my thoughts about these particular toys we have and my overall opinion of the manufacturers. You will find reviews on toys made by Haba, Plan Toys, Educo, Melissa & Doug and more.

Magic Cabin is a great place to get wooden and creative toys. They usually always have items on sale.

Haba
I must admit that Haba is my all time favorite. I love the designs of the soft toys and most of the toys are still made in Germany. Some are made in China but only under the watchful eye of Haba. These toys are safe, non-toxic and affordable when compared to some of the other brands. Here is a review of all the Haba toys we have.

Haba Dolls: Nellie (Nelle)
This is the sweetest little doll. I had originally purchased a waldorf style doll for my daughter’s first birthday and the doll was too big for her (approx 18″.) Haba’s Nele is only 12″ and is the perfect size for a doll sling or just for holding. The clothes she comes in are fashionable, just like something a “real” girl would wear and they are super quality. My daughter loves to dress and undress Nelle and she absolutely loves sharing the flower hairband with her and using it in her own hair although it doesn’t stay in very well (this may be from my daughters thin hair.)

A boy version of this doll is available too (Lukas.) This doll will definitely withstand tugging, pulling, and unlimited undressing and dressing. She will probably even last for your grandkids.

Haba also makes larger dolls in the same style which is perfect for older girls. Extra sets of clothing can be purchased for these bigger dolls. Hopefully Haba will come out with some extra sets of clothing for Nelle and Lukas.

Rattles:
We have a few Haba rattles and I love that they used water-based color dyes that are non-toxic. I have noticed the smallest amount of color bleeding onto my baby’s skin when he teethes on a Haba rattle or teething toy but nothing serious (no staining on clothing, etc.) I would much rather experience some color bleeding than a toy recall. Most of their rattles have multi-functionality. They function as teething and discovery toys. One of my favorites is the Trio from Haba. It is a triangle with a tiny bell, a squeaky button and a small mirror. This toy is easy for baby to hold and it gives the caregiver a fun way to entice baby to play with the toy.

Some other Haba rattles and clutching toys we have and love are Croo-ak the frog. This clutching toy seems difficult at first to hold but it helps baby develop grasping skills. The little string arms make it easy for the crawling baby to hold it in his mouth while he roams from room to room taking the frog with him. The Kringelring is another great toy with vivid colors. This one doubles as a teether toy and a rattle.

The best way to keep these toys from falling away from baby while in the car or stroller is to use one of Haba’s pacifier clips. These are almost a toy in themselves as my children often play with them even with a toy attached.

What I like best about these toys is the durability of the color. You won’t find the color chipping or rubbing off after a short time. These European made toys from Haba are durable and heirloom quality.

More Great Toys We Love from Haba:

First Blocks is another European made item from Haba. This is a great deal for the money. The blocks are a wonderful size for small hands and they all have a different surprise for a curious baby as well as a little buggy for those who love to push around things with wheels which is what our little guy loves to do. But the blocks definitely capture his attention as he figures out just exactly what the surprise is.

Tiny Town from Haba is the perfect stacking game for a toddler and the toy will grow with them as they learn how to make a scene out of the blocks as they stack them. The idea of stacking these blocks can be a littel bit difficult for the younger toddler but it’s a good challenge and I think it makes it a fun, interactive toy for a caregiver to interact with the child, teaching them the different shapes and curves and how they fit together.

Dream Journey is another soft toy thoughtfully designed by Haba to grow with a child. This toy has three little characters that rattle, squeak and jingle. An infant can play with these individually and as she gets older she can put them in their car and pull it along or transform the car into a boat with a sail. Dream Journey leaves room for the imagination and allows a young toddler to “take their friends” along for a ride.

Recently we purchased Haba’s wooden Cash Register and the coins and tear proof money to go with it. The buttons on the cash register can actually be pressed which I wouldn’t expect with a wooden toy. There is also an abacus style counter. The top of the cash register opens up for money storage. I like the fact that the register doesn’t require batteries which helps it to be an even greener and safer toy for children. What is even better is the tear proof dollars. We spent much time printing and cutting out bills for my daughter to play with just to have them crumpled and torn. This paper money from Haba is absolutely adorable, it’s a must-have even if you don’t own the cash register.

My daughter loves to role play and has a bright imagination so although she doesn’t know any different because it’s the only cash register she has had, I think she likes that there aren’t any numbers on the buttons of the cash register because she can pretend it is a button for whatever she wants it to be. I’m not worried about her learning her numbers because we do that in many other ways but I wouldn’t sit at a toy cash register and show her which number is number 2.
As far as role playing goes, my daughter uses different pieces of her wooden velcro play food to make ice cream; usually its half of a radish and part of an eggplant. I have looked at just about every wooden ice cream play food item available and Haba’s is by far the most adorable. They come in vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. They look very real and I like that they are simply an ice cream cone. These have fast become a favorite in my daughters kitchen.

The Walker Wagon from Haba is the most recent addition to our collection. I was pleasantly surprised to see this item. It was already assembled except for a couple of bolts and nuts needed to put the handle into place. It is very sturdy, sturdy enough for a small child (3-4 year old) to sit in, although some websites say it is not intended for children to sit in Haba’s catalog says there is a seat for brother or sister as well as storage for toys. However you choose to let your children play with this, it is a wonderful walker with outstanding design and construction. This walker wagon from Haba will be kept in our family to be passed down to the grandchildren.

Wood Kitchen from Educo
This wooden kitchen from Educo is the best deal out there. For only $99 you can get a sturdy wood kitchen that will fit into small spaces and the kitchen comes with over 20 different wood pieces of food and kitchen utensils. I was absolutely ecstatic about this find because other wood kitchens are very expensive and cost almost $200 for just a piece of a set. This wood kitchen has 2 burners, a sink, an oven, a refrigerator and a backsplash for storing pots, a spoon, a spatula and salt & pepper shakers which are all included. The salt & pepper shakers by the way are very cute and real looking; they even make a faint sound when shaken. The only thing I don’t like but I get over it very quickly for the price is that one of the shelves in both the oven and refrigerator are open to the back and items can fall out the back; although this never happens that I know of while being played with. This is one of the best toys we have bought for the money and it gets played with all the time. Available at Magic Cabin.

Plan Toys
Plan Toys are wonderful toys too. I love their wooden toys as much as I love Haba’s wooden toys. They are made of recycled rubberwood which is highly renewable and Plan Toys also uses non-toxic cures for their toys.

I bought the as a gift for my niece and although I didn’t have the luxury of watching her play with them, I thought that they were very well made. I would have bought one for my children but the kitchen we bought came with lots of play food already so we didn’t need them.

One of my favorite Plan Toys that we bought was the Geometric Shape Sorter. This toys is great for teaching shapes and counting and is initially a challenge. The quality is what you would expect from a company like Plan Toys and the color will last for years. My daughter gets very excited when she completes the geometric puzzle and I feel like I can celebrate with her because this shape sorter isn’t just a mediocre toy.

I bought the Nuts & Bolts from Plan Toys also and although I thoroughly like them, my daughter doens’t care for them but I think that is because of the nature of the toy. Older boys have come over to play and they have picked them up to unscrew the “nuts” from the “bolt” so I think it might be a bit of a boy toy. My son isn’t old enough to play with them yet but I’m sure he will like them.

My all time favorite toy from Plan Toys is the Solid Drum. There are two reasons I like it so much. The first is the cost. It is under $15 as a lot of their toys are. Secondly, the entire top and sides of the drum are solid wood and the bottom has nice little rubber pads that are screwed on to protect furniture that the drum might be set on. The tone the drum makes when hit with the included drum stick is very pleasant. I initially bought this drum for my nephew as a Christmas present and we have now bought another for our home.

Plan Toys also has many other toys including doll houses and roadways. You can build an entire town with Plan Toys and they will all be safe, non-toxic and possibly the most affordable brand of wood toys.

Melissa & Doug
All of the Melissa & Doug toys we have were given as gifts as they seem to be the most readily available wood toys. They can be found at stores such as Ross and Target and sometimes at local boutique shops. Although Melissa & Doug offer a gaurantee on their products, I haven’t found them to stand up as well as other wood toys.

The majority of Melissa & Doug toys we have are food items and art supply products. My favorite Melissa & Doug product is the set of kitchen bottles with magnetic lids. These are very fun and I haven’t found anything else like them. They do use paint on their products and although it is non-toxic, it does chip and rub off very easily.

We also have the magnetic dress up dolls from Melissa & Doug which I think is a great alternative to paper dolls.

Bottom line: Melissa & Doug do offer fun toys that aren’t available through European toy makers and sometimes the prices are a bit less but I think the price difference represents the quality.

Green Toys
Green Toys is a U.S. company based out of San Francisco, Ca. They even manufacture their products in San Francisco so they are a “made in the USA” toy maker.

All of their products are made with recycled #2 HDPE plastic. That is the plastic from milk containers, etc. Making their products from recycled plastic is reducing fossil fuels and the impact on the planet that creating toys can have.

We tried the tea set from Green Toys ($24). I think it’s great. It’s nice to get away from all of the themed tea sets so the little ones can just imagine even more. The plastic is sturdy and it meets FDA regulations for eating on. The size of the plates and cups are perfect and they don’t tip easily. I’d like to get some more outside play toys from Green Toys. They also make gardening and sand sets. Those are the kind of toys that you just buy plastic so why not go with Green Toys.

It takes quite a bit to feel like you have gotten your hair clean. But when you are all done, your hair is clean and it smells wonderful. So if you don’t mind the lack of a rich lather or if you have shorter hair that is normal to oily, this is the shampoo for you.

It’s non greasy and goes on easy. This organic chest balm isn’t just for babies, toddlers love it too.

Many people shy away from cloth diapering because of the preconception that they are inconvenient and more difficult to work with than disposable diapers. I have to admit that I also thought they would be inconvenient and difficult even though I was committed to using cloth diapers with our first baby. I had them all ready to go but still used disposables for the first five weeks because I thought just having the baby would be enough work. After starting cloth diapers I was surprised at how easy they were. It’s a miracle what they’ve done with diapers! The cloth diapers available today aren’t what your mom or grandma used decades ago.

Of course the simple prefolds and wool covers are still available but you at least have the option to use convenient Snappis or covers with a gusset to hold the prefold in place. Although prefolds are the most economical way to cloth diaper, it isn’t the only way.
Now all-in-one’s, fitted and pocket diapers are available. Now don’t let this confuse you. Having these types of diapers makes cloth diapering even easier and you still save money. Most dads love these new kinds of cloth diapers and are more receptive to the idea of having baby wear cloth diapers. What is important is for you to decide which diaper you like best and realize that cloth diapers are an investment. Although you will spend anywhere from $150-$400 to start cloth diapering, you’ll never have to spend that money again and you can diaper at least two children with the diapers you purchase if you wash them according to the manufacturer’s directions. Cloth diapers also have a good resale value when taken care of properly.
What’s the Difference?

Prefolds have many layers of cotton for absorbancy and are stitched into 3 sections. They are available bleached or unbleached and cost anywhere from $1.50 ea to $2.00 ea. For a newborn you need about 36 prefolds, for a toddler about 20-24. There are several ways to fold them or you can just fold them into thirds and place in the diaper cover. They come in different sizes and you’ll need a different size as your baby grows. There are chinese prefolds and indian prefolds. Indian prefolds are much softer and only get softer as you wash them. Most chinese prefolds are diaper service quality and will stand the test of many washings. If you are only diapering a couple of babies, diaper service quality may not be necessary. Diaper wraps or covers are required for these to keep wetness from wicking onto clothing and to keep messes contained. I think the most economical wrap is the Bummis Super Whisper Snap at about $10 per wrap. These same wraps are also available with Aplix, a high quality velcro, but I think the snaps last longer. Most recommend having 8-10 wraps on hand.
All-in-one’s are exactly what they sound like. The diaper is basically a reusable diaper because you change the entire diaper at each changing. Because all of the absorbent material is sewn into the diaper, they take along to dry. Some people find that these fit really well and they don’t experience leaks; this probably depends on the shape of your baby’s legs and tummy. Because you change the entire diaper at each changing, you need at least 20 of these reusable diapers and they cost around $18.00 or more each.

Pocket diapers have become my favorite. They are basically customizable all-in-one’s. They are built with a layer of micro-fleece that stays next to baby’s skin and then an insert in stuffed in between the layer of micro-fleece and the outer layer of waterproof fabric. There are many different inserts available from contoured and thin hemp inserts to multi-layered micro-terry fabric. You can add two inserts for nighttime or for long car rides. You get to make the diaper do what you need it to do. The entire diaper must be changed at each diaper change so you need to have at least 20 of these washable pocket diapers and the same amount or more of inserts. Pocket covers cost around $18.00 and inserts run anywhere from $2.00 to $5.00.

There are other diapers available but I have found these three types of diapers to be the most common.

Tips from a Cloth Diapering Mom

Get your husband excited about it by letting him know that it will save your family money.

Look for cloth diaper ’seconds’ online. Some manufactures sell there slightly flawed items for below retail and they perform just as well as the real deal.

If you’re using prefolds and experiencing leaks, try different folding techniques until you get the that works well for you.

If you’re using pocket diapers buy extra inserts because the pocket diapers dry faster than inserts so as the rest of the inserts are drying you can keep diapering.

Don’t be afraid to mix up your diaper stash by having a few different diapers for different needs like running errands or nighttime. You might want the AIO’s for errands but use prefolds at home. You might like the pocket diapers with the fleece layer to keep baby dry at nighttime.

Ask, Ask, Ask! Whoever it is that you are buying diapers from, ask them questions. Cloth diapers are an investment and you most likely won’t beable to return them once you’ve washed them so make sure you like what you’re getting.
